Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico
We traveled all day yesterday.. not much to see in La. or Tx in the areas we were in. In Texas we were facinated with the wind generators which look like windmills.. hundreds of them. We spent the night in Abilene,Tx. It was hot but windy, so it didn't feel as hot as in NC. We have stayed at the Comfort Inn Suites which are really nice with a sofa bed so Bubba(Little Johnny) can have his own bed which he likes. The hotel also has a pool, jacuzzi and workout room, so we have all enjoyed using them.
Today we arrived in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The temperature here has been over 100 degrees. We toured the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens today. We saw eagles, hawks, owls, rattlesnakes, an elk, a mountain lion, wild boars, and lots of cactus. It is sooo hot. Part of the tour was outside and it took me awhile to recover from the heat. Tonight we are going to watch the flight of the bats from the Carlsbad Caverns. Around sunset thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats fly out of the caves . It begins with a few flutters, but in a matter of minutes a thick bat whirlwind spirals out of the cave up into the dark sky. The exodus can last from 20 minutes to 2 1/2 hrs. They are heading to go feed in the valleys. At dawn the bats fly back to the cave in a manner almost as remarkable as their departure.
Tommorow we will tour and explore the caverns. In the afternoon we will head out and spend the night in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
